Sutro Architects is a San Francisco based, boutique architecture and design firm specializing in custom residential and unique hospitality and commercial projects. With offices in San Francisco and Healdsburg, our work ranges from city to country and from contemporary to classic. We design new buildings, renovations and additions, and help with historic preservation. We are interested in creating and reimagining spaces that make living and working joyful and invigorating. Each project is unique to the location, context, and client.

Our primary office is in San Francisco, where the practice was founded in 2005. The office is on Post Street, in a Beaux-Arts building originally built in 1919. It is open and collaborative, with meeting spaces, material library and a virtual model lab. Stephen Sutro leads our San Francisco group.

Our Healdsburg office was opened in 2015 when Eliot Sutro moved to Healdsburg to raise a family. The office is a block off of the downtown square. Eliot leads a group of architects positioning us well to design and coordinate the construction of projects in Healdsburg, Sonoma and Napa.

We guide our clients through the project process from start to finish by leading the project management effort. We manage and coordinate the work of all consultants and other partners to bring together solutions that are both beautiful and practical.

We begin with feasibility analysis, collecting relevant information about the site, code, projected cost, and possible high-level design directions. With a validated scope and a clear program, we use a schematic design process to study different design options- arrangement, size, aesthetic are all refined in this stage. Our tools range from freehand sketch, precedent images and preliminary material palette collections to precise drawings and three dimensional, interactive models. Each option is refined and evaluated for time and cost.

With an approved design, we produce detailed drawings and electronic models to represent the details of the project for permitting and construction. During construction we observe the progress and collaborate with our construction partners to make sure the result is as successful as intended.

As part of our architecture services, we design all aspects of the exterior and interior built environment including finishes, fixtures and products. When clients also wish us to design, specify, procure and install furniture, area rugs, window coverings, accessories and art, we do that too, with the help of our in-house interiors department.

When clients wish to bring an outside interior designer to the team, we are happy to collaborate. We have successfully worked with many interior designers from the bay area, other parts of the country and abroad.
